Sclerotherapy Varicose Vein Treatment
Most varicose veins are best treated with compression sclerotherapy – this involves a series of treatments with painless injections into the vein, using a solution that causes the vein to close.
Varicose veins are due to the failure of the valves in the veins. These are found every few inches along the vein and normally prevent blood flowing back down the leg. In varicose veins, because of faulty valves, most of the blood is flowing back down the leg instead of returning to the heart, making the veins bulge, and often causing aching or swollen legs, restless legs at night and other symptoms such as burning and itching. In severe cases there can be ulceration.
Treatments are followed by a week or two in support stockings (available from the clinic at the time of first treatment). The number of treatments required ranges from 1 to 6+
